Darren Webster’s charge up the PDC rankings continues. The world number 14 reached the quarter finals of the World Matchplay before losing to world number 6 Mensur Suljovik 16-10. Webster’s first round match saw him defeat Irishmen Steve Lennon 10-6 . His second round match was against reigning world champion Rob Cross. On paper it looked like a tough draw but the Norfolk man run out an impressive 11-8 winner to secure his place in the last 8 for the second year running. Suljovik is a frustrating player to play against and Webster quickly found himself in trouble going into the first break 4-1 down. Darren played with a lot more composure during the second period and was 5- 4 up before missing tops that allowed Suljovik to go into the second break all level. Suljovik regained the lead at 6-5 but Webster still looked in the game. At 13-10 Darren missed a crucial throw that might have given him a chance but Suljovik finished off that leg and the next two to not only win the match but move into the semi finals. It has been a fantastic year already for Darren. With the European Finals, Grand Prix, Grand Slam, Players Championship Finals and the World Championship yet to play for Webster will feel he is in with a good chance of winning a major before the year is out. He deserves it.
