WORLD CLASS DARTS AT THE GUILDHALL
World class darts comes to the Southampton Guildhall on June 21st when 2 time World Champion Adrian Lewis, Premier League star Andy Hamilton, Players Championship winner Kevin Painter and World rated Jamie Caven compete in the inaugural "Southampton City Masters" tournament.
28 year old Stoke resident Adrian "Jackpot" Lewis is already a 2 time PDC World Champion. Lewis won his first World Title in 2010 defeating Scotsman Gary Anderson and then the following year he beat fellow Southampton Masters competitor Andy Hamilton 7-3 in the final. After his 2010 victory he was hugged by non-other than Royal darts fan his highness Prince Harry of Wales!
With numerous professional tournament wins already under his belt and being one of only 5 men to have won a PDC World Title Lewis is already assured of the mantle "Darts Legend". Probably the most naturally gifted player on the pro tour Lewis was afforded his "Jackpot" nickname when in the 2005 Desert Classic in Las Vegas he won $100,000 dollars on the slot machines but was unable to collect due to being underage to gamble on the Vegas strip.
Adrian has had a relatively quiet six months and will see the Southampton City Masters as good preparation for the European Pro Tour event being held in Gibraltar in the last weekend of June. Recently married Adrian is currently rated number 3 in the World.
Fellow Stoke resident Andy "The Hammer" Hamilton has had what can only be described as a blistering 24 months. In July 2011 Hamilton was at the Matchplay in Blackpool facing defeat firmly in the face. Down 15-8 with Simon Whitlock needing only one more leg to win Hamilton began the most incredible 50 minute comeback in PDC history finally winning the game 17-15. The win seemed to kick start Hamilton's career culminating in his appearance in the Ladbrokes World Championship final against the aforementioned Adrian Lewis.
In 2012 Hamilton was awarded a wild card to appear in the prestigious McCoy’s Premier League where once again he astounded everyone by reaching the final week. Only losing at the o2 to Simon Whitlock who was able to avenge his defeat from 6 months previous. 2012 also saw Hamilton make history by being the only PDC player in that year to make it to at least the quarter final of every TV event of that year. Andy is currently ranked number 6 in the PDC World Rankings
44 year old Billericay born Ipswich FC nut Kevin "The Artist" Painter fulfilled his lifetime dream when in 2011 he won his first Major Title defeating Mark Webster 13-9 to lift the Players Championship Finals in front of millions of ITV viewers.
Kevin said at the time "To win a Major is so difficult today because the standard is just so high. It feels incredibly satisfying and is something that can never be taken away from me"
Like Hamilton, Painter was also awarded a wild card for the 2012 Premier League and although not so successful in his maiden year Kevin will comfort himself that he was in the running right up until the final week of the 15 week Sky televised tournament. Kevin is currently ranked number 12 in the World.
Jamie "Jabba" Caven has already overcome an unbelievable handicap to achieve his dream of becoming a full time professional. At the age of three months old he was stung in the eye by a bee and since that fateful day has only ever been able to see out of one eye.
With 2 Pro Tour wins to his name, firstly in Canada and secondly in his home town of Derby in 2011, it is surely only a matter of time before the 35 year old lifts a Major Title.
Married to Debbie, Jamie has recently written an autobiography called " The way eye see it". 35 year old Jamie is ranked number 32 in the World.
